UCAS Application

This is the personal statement which i added to my UCAS application and was sent to all of the universities I applied for.

I have a curious approach to working with pattern, tactile materials, dyes, print making and exploring the various techniques within textiles design. I see sustainability as being fundamental in my own practice and aspire to work in an environmentally conscious way. Through my chosen project on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design Practice I used natural dying and recycled materials to help extend the lifetime of fabrics. I was able to use sage from my allotment and food waste such as onion skins to create experimental dye outcomes. In another project I developed my own brief to create a pop-up installation for a local National Trust property. I was intrigued by the walled gardens where the yew tree hedges are undergoing a restoration project and created a patchwork quilt using fabrics sourced from car boot sales. My ideas were informed by the artist Holly Chang who through her use of imagery and dying fabrics, tells a narrative. I learnt from her application of traditional hand processes combined with photography of chosen locations to explore her own memories. I have also experimented with ceramics and created a hand-built carton and explored the theme of microplastics overflowing into the natural environment. I created a smooth surface using glaze to replicate plastic, which contrasted against the rough textured waste bursting out of broken holes in the structure. Through this I developed an understanding of working in a 3D way. I enjoy using lino printing as I like the effect of layering shapes, as well as how much I can experiment with the surface and colour tone. Laura Slater’s printing work inspired me through her technique of building up expressive abstract shapes. The artist has collaborated with large scale companies to create designs which align with their brand message and as a textile designer I would like the opportunity to work with organisations creatively. I have collaborated in a live brief where I individually designed sections and painted an outdoor mural for a local nursery. This was challenging as the client wanted illustrations that were appealing for children and the local community. I work as a lifeguard and through this experience I have interacted with children and adults who have diverse needs. This has helped me to think about accessibility for the audience who view my designs. I have observed how calming swimming can be for people with disabilities and in my textiles, I want to explore how my choice of surfaces can have a sensory impact. During a recent volunteering trip to the Gambia, I worked with young children in a school. I planned and led art activities which I adapted to the age and development of the children. I engaged with them through activities and despite language barriers was able to communicate through artwork which developed my resiliency skills. On a trip to a local market, I experienced how textiles and clothing are constructed and sold which illustrated the garment cycle in practice and enabled me to see a community based around fabrics. I was able to reflect on how the maker and customer had more involvement than in the United Kingdom.Through a textiles degree I would further develop my digital skills and learn new processes to become an individual designer with a consciously sustainable focus.
